Domaine Denis Mortet - Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru | French Red Wine

The exceptional positions of these three specifically named vine plots, standing very near to Clos de Bèze in the background, make it undoubtedly the most charming of the Gevrey-Chambertin First Growths of the estate. Behind its purity, we are instantly charmed by its fresh fruit, velvety smooth tannin and delicious texture.

The Mortet estate was founded in 1956 by Charles Mortet with just a single hectare of vines to his name. In classic tradition of Burgundy Charles sold the majority of his crop to merchant houses. Charles was joined by his son, Denis, and Denis’s wife Laurence in 1978 and the two worked alongside Charles for nearly 20 years before they took full control of the estate in 1993.

Mortet’s parcel of vines in this highly regarded 1er Cru vineyard in Gevrey includes plantings at both the top and bottom of the slope with a due south exposure. They own roughly 1.2 hectares of vines that average 60 years in age, the total vineyard is just under 10 hectares.
